Secret Sunset Rock | Cape Town’s Hidden Gem For Spectacular Sunsets

Looking for the perfect spot to watch the sunset in Cape Town? The coastline offers many stunning locations, but my favorite is the secret sunset spot called The Rock. It’s called a secret sunset spot as it’s hidden among the clifftops, in the brush, behind the posh homes on Ocean Drive. This intimate spot offers an unobstructed view of Camps Bay, Clifton Bay and the Twelve Apostles as the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean. In this post, I cover secret sunset rock, how to get there, and what to expect.

Secret sunset rock is one of the best places to watch a sunset in Cape Town.

Secret Sunset Rock

This secret spot is nestled behind the multi-million dollar, luxury homes that overlook the coast. It’s located at the end of Ocean Drive, where you can find a path to sneak into the brush, pick a giant boulder that’s been warmed by the sun, and sit and watch the sunset.

Even better, it’s completely natural. There are no signs, no food for sale, no artificial lights, no artificial anything. Just nature at its finest.

While you may feel like you should not be here, because the neighborhood feels so exclusive, it’s accepted. And by the looks of the faces of the guards here, even expected. Especially when the sky promises the perfect sunset.

Ocean Drive dead ends at the peak of the cliffs above the ocean. You will not be able drive all the way to the end of the road, as guards will stop you, or your taxi, at a certain point. From that point, you walk to the end of the road. If you’re driving, you will need to turn back and find a place to park.

When you reach the dead end, scan for footpaths between the rocks and bushes. Weave your way back into the brush. You’ll see dozens of massive smooth, rounded boulders to climb on and claim as your own for the next hour.

It’s best to arrive well before sunset to find a rock with a good vantage point. I arrived 45 minutes before sunset to get mine. Also, make sure to wear grippy shoes so you can comfortably wander the paths and climb a rock. Also consider bringing a snack and something to drink. If you want, bring a full picnic. When I was here, I saw a couple bring a pizza.

As the sun sets, you’ll see the silouhettes of people on all the rocks around. It’s kind of cool, collectively watching in silence. After the sun sets it gets dark very quickly as there is no artificial light here, so don’t linger too long.

Dinner After Sunset

There are no restaurants really close, as this is a ritzy neighborhood, but there are two within walking distance that get fantastic reviews.

Zest

Zest features contemporary South African flavors with a Mediterranean twist. Featured in many “best of” lists in Cape Town, their menu offers a lot of seafood and steak dishes that look amazing. I chose the Grilled Spring Bok, which is a medium-sizes antelope native to the area. It came with sweet potato puree, figs & port wine. It was amazing. Incredibly tender and full of flavor.

I came here on a Thursday night around 7 PM (right after sunset) and was able to get a seat without a reservation. My walk from The Rock was about 20 minutes downhill. While they say not to walk solo in Cape Town after dark, I felt safe as this is a nicer area, but remember that walking is at your own risk.

The Ellerman House

The Ellerman House is another excellent choice, with incredible views, food, and service. This restaurant, however, requires advance reservations.

It’s a Relais Chateaux property, rated the best City Hotel in Africa by Travel & Leisure in 2024, Gold List by Condé Nast Traveler in 2020, and many more. See its full list of credentials on its website.

The balcony offers incredible views of Bantry Bay, the food and service is noted as excellent, and the hotel has one of the most important art collections in South Africa. You can also splurge and book a room or a villa here. Some rooms and villas have balconies overlooking the ocean.

The two restaurants above are the best nearby, but here are a few more fun places in the area.

  • Una Mas Mezcaleria features many Mexican bites, tacos, tequila, and mezcal.
  • Three Wise Monkeys is the perfect stop if you’re craving ramen or sushi.
  • La Perla offers a variety of Italian food. This place is really best for watching the sunset at Seapoint, but I also ate here and enjoyed it.

How To Get To Secret Sunset Rock

To find this on Google maps, search for “The Rock”. Make sure it’s the right place by verifying it’s location at the end of Ocean Drive in Fresnaye.

Uber is available in Cape Town and also has this spot listed as “The Rock”. Again, double check that it’s the location at the end of Ocean Drive in Fresnaye.

I arrived via Uber. A guard stopped our vehicle well before the dead end. From there, I walked, following the road to the end (below) and then into the brush.

To be completely honest, I didn’t even know this was the right place until I arrived and saw others here doing the same thing. Especially when I saw the guys head in the photo below.

End of Ocean Drive

Note: My cell phone could not get a signal strong enough to book a return Uber ride at the peak. I’m sure if I walked down the hill, I could have ordered one, but had already decided to walk to Zest for dinner.

Safety

Everyone says it is not safe to walk alone at night in Cape Town, but this is such a high-end area, I personally felt safe walking to the restaurant alone here. There are also several guards in complexes near the summit, where the poshest homes are, and after that, I just decided to keep going until I got to Zest.

This said, you need to make your own decision on risk. As this sunset spot becomes more popular, it could become a magnet for thieves.

Also, I have read that there are venomous snakes in Cape Town. Especially in the brush. I can’t speak to specific snakes in this area, or confirm if there are any, but it is something to be aware of. If you have concerns about this, read up on it in more detail.
