Myzithres Viewpoint & Beach | Hidden Gem Of Zakynthos

Myzithres viewpoint is stunning. A hidden gem on the island of Zakynthos. Its massive, white limestone rocks stand majestically in the sparkling, azure sea with a sandy beach that becons you down to explore more.

Surprisingly, these rocks were known as the Myzithres islands just a few years ago when an earthquake left a sandy beach on the strip of land between the rocks and Zakynthos. Since then, this area has become more popular, yet it’s still an underrated destination. And while there are a few tours to see this area by sea, most people drive to Keri on their own to see the spectacular views from several clifftop locations here. This post covers Myzithres Viewpoint and Mythizres Beach, the best viewpoints, how to get there, and what to expect.

Myzithres Clifftop Viewpoint & Beach

Myzithres is in the southwest corner of Zakynthos, 2 km from the village of Keri. You can view their serene and tranquil splendor from the cliffs above, or take a boat to explore and swim in the crystal clear sea below.

First I’ll cover the viewpoints from the clifftop above, as this is most common way to visit and where to park. Then I’ll review the best ways to get to the beach below.

Myzithres Clifftop Viewpoint Options

The Myzithres viewpoint is in the village of Keri, just southwest of the Laganas Marine Park area where you can go turtle spotting for the rare and endangered Caretta Caretta. There are actually three viewpoints, each a little different.

  • Myzithres Viewpoint
  • Myzithres Lighthouse Restaurant Viewpoint
  • Myzithres Clifftop Viewpoint

Myzithres Viewpoint

The first viewpoint is the official viewpoint for Myzithres. This area provides a view of the western side of the Myzithres Rocks as shown in the photo below.

The clifftop area here is protected, lined with a glass fence, making the viewpoint safe for everyone, including children and people with limited mobility.

There’s also a small canteen here called Mythizres Summer Vibes. They serve coffee, beverages, light food options, ice cream, and cocktails. Sometimes there are a few tables set up outdoors. At the very least, there’s a bench overlooking the view.

This viewpoint is very simple, but a very safe and inexpensive way to view this Mediterranean beauty.

It’s located a short walk from the the Summer Vibes parking area. See below for more details on getting to Myzithres viewpoint.

Myzithres Lighthouse Restaurant Viewpoint

The Keri Lighthouse Restaurant also provides a viewpoint at a very similar angle as the one above. It’s located directly beside the official Myzithres viewpoint.

This viewpoint is just a little farther west, so you see a little less of the cliff and a little more of the beach area. This viewpoint is also very safe and perfect for children and those with mobility issues.

This restaurant is lovely, with a large balcony overlooking the sea and Myzithres. They also have a glass walkway on the balcony that extends out over the sea for photos.

The restaurant gets very busy, especially during lunch and dinner hours, so it’s best to make reservations in advance. The best tables, of course, are the ones closest to the edge of the balcony. Try to book these front row seats if you can. All the seats here are great through. The staff is friendly and the food is good, although a little pricey. And, of course, anyone can walk to the glass walkway at any time to take a photo.

Myzithres Clifftop Viewpoint

The third viewpoint is the one above Myzithres, on the edge of the cliff. This view is very dramatic as Myzithres is directly below!

There is no fence or railing at this viewpoint, so it’s not recommended for children or those with mobility issues. It is also not recommended for people that have a fear of heights.

To get here, look for the rutted dirt and gravel road heading up and to the left just before the Summer Vibes parking area. It’s about a 10-minute walk up to the viewing area. Note that if you have a 4 x 4 or all terrain vehicle that can handle the bumpy road, you can drive up to the viewpoint, but most people walk.

At the top, you can walk along the edge of the viewpoint and find you’re perfect angle for photos, but be careful! Not only because there is no fence, but also because there is no guarantee that some of the cliff will not give away while you’re standing on it. A visit to this viewpoint is definitely at your own risk (but so worth it)!

Myzithres Beach

To explore the Myzithres Beach area at sea level and admire the rocks and cliffs towering above, you need a boat. There are three options.

  • Take an organized tour
  • Rent and captain your own boat
  • Hire a boat with a captain

Organized Tour

There are only a few tours to Mythizres, most often it’s to visit at sunset and see the sun dropping between the two rocks of Myzithres.

I recommend this one: Zakynthos: Sunset Cruise to Myzithres with Wine. It departs from the port of Agios Sostis in Laganas. The first stop is to see enchanting Cameo Island (where the wedding in Mamma Mia was filmed). It then heads to Turtle Island for swimming and snorkeling, and stops to look for turtles along the way. After this, you sail past the splendid Keri Caves, where you have another chance to swim and snorkel. The boat trip ends with a glass of wine on the boat watching the sunset over Mythizres Rocks. For more information on these stops, which are all fabulous, see my post on Turtle Spotting In Zakynthos, as most tours cover these same areas.

A day trip tour option is Zakynthos: Turtle Island and Caves Private Boat Trip. It’s very similar to the tour above except it stops for a swim near the Myzithres Beach area during the day. Also, there is no stop at Cameo Island in this tour.

Rent A Boat

Another way to get to Myzithres Beach is to rent a boat and captain it yourself. Surprisingly, there is no license required for boat rentals under 40hp on Zakynthos. If you’ve never skippered a boat before, they will give you a brief lesson.

The ride to Myzithres is not too long, about 30 minutes, but you will pass the stunning Keri Caves along the way. Make sure to allow some time to stop and see the various caves (images below). You may also want to swim here for a bit before Myzithres.

The Keri Caves are near the Myzithres Beach viewpoint.

The closest harbor to Myzithres is in Laganas, on the south end of the island. One thing to keep in mind is that this area is the Marine Park of Zakynthos, which protects the endangered Caretta Catetta that come here to mate and lay their eggs. Use extreme caution to make sure you do not injure one of these stunning creatures if you skipper your own boat!

Rent A Boat With A Captain

If you’re uncertain about your skippering skills, or don’t want the hassle, rent a captain when you rent the boat. This is the ultimate as you will have a professional helping to navigate and dock the boat while you get to enjoy Myzithres and any other stops you choose at your leisure.

How To Get To Myzithres Viewpoint

Mythirzes is located about 13 miles (20 km) south of Zante Town, and takes around 45-minutes by car, depending on where you’re staying there. If you’re staying in Laganas, on the south end of the island, the distance is a little shorter, about 9 miles (15 km). Depending, of course, on your exact location in Laganas.

For Myzithres Viewpoint, follow your GPS to Myzithres Summer Vibes or Keri Lighthouse Restaurant. If you plan to see tall the viewpoints, or anything beyond the Keri Lighthouse restaurant, I recommend parking in the Summer Vibes parking area. When I was here in 2023, it was free and there was plenty of parking.

Best Time To Visit Myzithres

The best time of year to visit Zakynthos is spring and fall, when the temperatures are most pleasant. Summer can be hot and will have more tourists, but the water temperature will also be warmer then.

The best time of day to visit Myzithres depends on what you want. If you visit during the day, the sea will have a brilliant blue hue. A stunning contrast with the white rocks of Myzithres, so perfect for photos. Daytime is also best if you want to swim here. Try to arrive early before the other boats do as the area is small.

Sunset is another amazing time to visit as the sky turns shades of amber, red, and gold.

How Did Myzithres Viewpoint Get It’s Name?

The name Myzithres comes from the Greek cheese called Myzithra. This cheese is a whey cheese made from sheep or goats or both.

It’s a soft cheese, usually hung to dry in a bag. In the end, the shape of the finished cheese looks a bit like the giant rocks in the sea here…big white lumps!
